Perc TestSteps to take when I need a new system
You will need a percolation test/deep hole observation test.

This is performed by contacting a licensed installer in the Town who will then coordinate with the Board of Health a time to come to your property to perform the test.   In the case of a repair or upgrade to the system, the Board of Health performs these tests for no charge.  However, you will incur a charge from the installer/backhoe operator.

A percolation test/deep hole test is done by a licensed installer who digs one or two 10 foot deep holes where the soil is then evaluated by the Board of Health or a licensed soil evaluator/engineer.  A water table is determined, soil type and classifications are documented on a soil log which is used by an engineer to design a septic system.

A set of plans will then need to be submitted to the Board of Health for review.  You will receive a permit if the plans pass.  Sometimes changes are needed on the plan when mistakes are found.  These are corrected by the engineer and resubmitted to the Board of Health for review.

It is important to get a few bids for the construction of your new septic system. It is a very competitive bidding process and you may find big differences in price.  Please remember to get bids from our list of licensed Installers.

If you have any questions going forward with this process, please contact Shelly at the Board of Health.
