Frequently Asked Questions
Where does our water come from?
Wilmington's water source is groundwater, which is pumped from four wells located throughout the town. We also have the ability to purchase water from the MWRA. In addition to our connection with the MWRA, we maintain emergency interconnections with North Reading, Burlington and Woburn.

Who do I contact in the case of a Water or Sewer emergency?
If during working hours, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday, please contact the Water and Sewer Department at 978-658-4711.

If after working hours, please call the Wilmington Police Department at 978-658-5071.

Who do I contact if I am purchasing or selling a house?
Please contact the billing office at 978-658-3116. They will schedule final water meter reads and assist with tranferring ownership of water and sewer accounts.

Who do I contact when I have a question about my bill?
For questions regarding water bills, please contact the billing office at 978-658-3116. Please keep in mind that often times, high water usage is due to a problem with internal plumbing. More often than not, a leaky toilet is the cause.

How do I check for leaks in my home?
Toilets - Add a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the food coloring appears in the toilet bowl, this means you have a leak. Some toilet leaks are intermittent, so you do not always see or hear the water running.

Faucets - Check all faucets and piping for leaks by monitoring for drips of water under sinks and from exposed pipes. Perform an inspection with the water on and off, as some leaks only occur when the water is on.

Check plumbing in the basement by monitoring for drips of water coming from exposed pipes.

Occasionally, leaks develop behind walls or in areas that are not visible. Read your meter periodically to monitor for drastic changes.

Who is responsible for my water service line?
In the case of a residential property, the Water Department is responsible for the length of pipe that runs from the connection at the street main to the shutoff valve (usually at the property line or sidewalk). The customer is responsible for the service line from the shutoff valve to the building and all other plumbing on private property. The Water Department is not responsible for making repairs to any water service at an industrial or commercial building.

Why does my water appear cloudy or milky?
Tiny air bubbles much like the ones found in carbonated beverages cause this appearance. These bubbles do not make the water unsafe to drink. In fact, they will rise to the top within a few minutes and your glass of water will be clear again! This tends to happen more in cold weather months or after service has been performed on the water system.

Who do I contact with questions regarding my septic system?
For information regarding to septic systems, tanks etc., please contact the Wilmington Board of Health at 978-658-4298.

Does Wilmington add Fluoride to the drinking water?
The Wilmington Water Department does not add fluoride to the water. However, the MWRA does fluoridate their supply. Primarily during the warm weather months, when water demand is higher, the Town of Wilmington purchases MWRA water as a supplement to its own supply.
